Christmas in the Pelorus Sound

Christmas morning felt very different this year. Instead of waking up to sub zero temperatures and snow, we opened our eyes to bright sunshine, and beautiful blue ocean in the Pelorus Sounds!

The girls openeing presents

The girls spent the morning opening a few presents we had picked up along the trip, including a stuffed toy magnet from our visit to the Hero Rats in Cambodia and a build your own telescope from Lake Tekapo.

With the sun out, we spread a blanket on the lawn and the girls happily played with their new toys. Evelyn was especially excited about her Sylvanian Families set, and they both spent ages creating little scenes together.

A Walk to See the Tame Eels in the Pelorus Sound

The walk through the trees

In the early afternoon we went for a short walk from the house to a nearby stream beside an old farmhouse. There were tame eels in the water, and they swam straight over when we approached the river.

Christmas Dinner BBQ

For dinner, instead of a traditional Christmas dinner roast, we fired up the BBQ. We cooked sausages, burgers, skewers, corn, roasted vegetables, potato salad, and a spinach, sweet potato and pomegranate salad.

It was a great change and felt good to eat plenty of vegetables, something we have all been missing a bit on this trip.

In the evening we watched the second part of The Lord of the Rings, and while it was still early, the girls convinced Uncle Michael to watch K Pop Demon Hunters with them. It earned a solid six out of ten rating from him, which is high praise!

It was a wonderful Christmas in the Pelorus Sounds and meant a lot to spend it with family. This was our first year without Grandad, so being together made the day feel especially meaningful.
