Today we headed back to Auckland, but not until 6 pm, so we had a relaxed morning exploring Oneroa, the largest town on the island, before heading to Mudbrick vineyard, for some wine tasting.

Oneroa town

There are some really lovely shops in Oneroa, although it is definitely busier than anywhere else we’ve visited on the island, and it has a distinctly upmarket and expensive feel.

We wandered down to Oneroa Beach and spent some time relaxing by the water before driving to a vineyard for some wine tasting and lunch. One of the great things about the area is that many of the vineyards are so close together, giving you plenty of options within just a ten‑minute drive.

Mudbrick Winery sits right on a hill just a five minute drive from Oneroa. It’s one of the more upmarket vineyards on the island, which became very obvious when we saw a helicopter landing as we drove in!

As it was our final day on the island and the end of our trip was drawing near, Granny treated us to a lovely lunch at the Mudbrick Restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious - we shared warm focaccia, a fresh salad, meatballs, calamari, and some of the best scallops I’ve ever tasted. All of it was enjoyed with a beautiful view over the sea!

After eating, we settled into bean bags under the olive trees and soaked up the views. I could easily have stayed there for hours with a book. The outlook was incredible and we could even see the Auckland skyline in the distance.

Sandy Bay Beach

After lunch we drove to Sandy Bay Beach, which was a much smaller beach than the others we have visited on the island, but it's a great beach for swimming as it's really shallow.

There are some rocky areas that you can explore if you have water shoes, but if not, watch out as there are a lot of oyster shells that could easily cut your feet open.

Little Oneroa Beach

Our final stop was Little Oneroa Beach, which is another great beach for families. There’s a fun playground right behind the beach, and there was even a woodfire pizza food truck in the car park which was awfully tempting!

It was a bit of a strange feeling as although we were at a beautiful beach, we were all very aware that we were catching the ferry back to Auckland in a few hours, and that tomorrow would be the last full day on our trip.

When we finally arrived into the bay and approached Auckland, the view of the skyline was pretty impressive. We made our way to our hotel and got some rest as we wanted to make the most of our last day in New Zealand.
