Today we finally got the rainy day in Wellington that the forecast had been promising us. Luckily, we had a plan!

The Wellington Climbing Wall at Fergs

Jessica had spotted a climbing wall on the waterfront the day before, so we headed decided that if it was raining, we would go back so she could give it a go. Fergs isn't the only climbing wall in Wellington, but it's a great location on the waterfront, plus if it wasn't possible for her to climb, we could go to the Wellington Museum instead.

Me belaying and Jess climbing

In order for Jess to do the rope climbing (as opposed to just the bouldering), I needed to complete a short belay instructor session, which was free.

What I hadn’t expected was learning how to belay.

I’ve wanted to learn how to belay for ages, so it worked out perfectly.

Once the training was done, we headed off on our own and Jess got straight to work on the walls. She’s so confident when she climbs and has really improved her technical skills, so I’m hoping she keeps it up when we’re back in Calgary.

Willis Lane Food Court

For lunch we went to Willis Lane, which has a great food court with loads of options, mostly Asian food. I went for a bánh mì and Susie chose a pho, so I guess we’re both missing Vietnam a little bit! It’s a great spot for lunch, and they even have mini golf and arcade rooms downstairs, which is perfect for kids.

After lunch, Susie and I went shopping, Jess headed off to get her nails painted with Granny as her Christmas present, and Evelyn managed to sucker Michael into buying her an ice cream.

Date Night!

The Library cocktail bar in Wellington

For dinner, Susie and I headed into town for a very rare date night. We had some lovely pasta at 1154, although the service was so quick that we had finished our meal within less than an hour! We fancied a cocktail, so went for a walk across town to a cocktail bar called The Library for a drink. The Library is a beautiful old building with a real jazz vibe, and the cocktails were amazing.

The Space Place

While we were out enjoying ourselves, the girls headed up to the Space Place with Uncle Michael, where they learned all about space and planets and got to explore the interactive exhibits.

They absolutely loved it and came back full of stories about what they’d seen and learned.
