Breakfast at the Namkhan hotel

This morning we went for breakfast at the hotel restaurant. They serve a lovely continental breakfast of pastries, an egg station, cereals, cheeses and cold meats. They also have great coffee which I always appreciate first thing in the morning.

We spent some time walking through the organic farm, where the hotel grows most of the food they serve in their restaurant. It’s my dream to have something like this in Canada one day!

The Hotel Pool and Candle Making Craft

After breakfast we spent some time at the pool before heading to the hotel’s craft area, where the girls were doing a candle-making activity.

The candle making craft instructor

The instructors were great and clearly explained what the girls needed to do, which involved melting soy wax into a liquid, mixing it with different colours, and then pouring it into molds before cooling in ice water.

The girls each made two candles with multiple layers of colour. They took a while to set, so we didn’t collect them until after we got home from dinner, but the girls were really happy with how they turned out.

It’s great that they can do local crafts like this while travelling, as it mirrors the kinds of things they learn in school but with a cultural element added in.

They’re having another craft day at the Ock Pop Tok craft centre tomorrow, so they’ve definitely got their arts and crafts homeschooling in this week.

Luang Prabang Night Market

We caught the hotel shuttle into town to do some gift shopping at the Luang Prabang night market and have dinner at the outdoor food section.

The girls had roti, while Susie and I both had Thai food. I also tried my first Beer Lao IPA, which was pretty good!

We really love the night market and found some great gifts for friends and family back home, but can’t say what as they might be reading!
