the towers at night

This morning we flew from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur, to spend two nights visiting Malaysia's capital city. We last stayed in KL back in 2009 as part of our honeymoon, so we were excited to see how the city has changed since then.

Kuala Lumpur Central Market

The central market

We arrived at our hotel (Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral) around lunch time, but we couldn’t check in until 3pm, so we decided to take a short Grab taxi over to the Central Market, as it’s one of the most popular markets in Kuala Lumpur.

Laksa Ordering station

There is a food court upstairs that had plenty of Asian food options, and both me and Susie got a laksa soup. It was delicious, but I managed to drop a prawn back into my soup and splash my shorts with that beautiful turmeric yellow liquid….

The outdoor part of the market

There are lots of great shops to browse, and it’s a great place to buy jewelry, local dress, postcards and other souvenirs. Susie got some time to write another postcard for her friend back in Canada too.

Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral Hotel

We checked into our hotel, the Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, and we were pretty happy that the beds were queen size. It’s always one of the first things we look for when we get a hotel room, and it makes such a big difference having that extra space when we are sharing beds most nights.

Girls in the hotel pool

We spent an hour swimming in the rooftop pool, which was an infinity pool with great views across the city (though unfortunately not of the Petronas Towers).

There was also a poolside bar, but it looked more like a dodgy 90s nightclub, complete with neon lights and a long list of happy hour deals - including a free bottle of wine for groups of four women or more. I imagine it gets pretty lively once the sun goes down, but we won’t be partaking!

Visiting a city's night markets are always one of my favourite things to do, as I love seeing all the different food that is on offer.

This one was great! It was so busy and there were loads of different food options. There were chicken and beef skewers, incredible looking fruit, and some amazing seafood. The massive octopus tentacle skewers looked amazing!

I ended up getting a whole squid on a stick but in my haste to eat it, forgot to take a photograph!

The Petronas Towers

petronas towers taken from the bridge

We arrived at the Petronas Towers right at 9pm, just in time for the hourly fountain show, where the fountains danced in sync with the music.

It reminded me of two other light shows I’ve seen over the years; one in Dubai at the Burj Khalifa, and another at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

If you are wanting to get a nice photo, there is a really pretty spot to photograph the towers from a bridge just behind the pond where they have some fairy lights (see photo above).

The girls watching the show

The shopping mall at the base of the towers, Suria KLCC, is huge! We went inside after spotting a Marks & Spencer, which of course meant picking up a packet of Percy Pigs and a chocolate roll for the girls. From there, it was a short Grab ride back to the hotel, snacks in hand.
