We recently took a spontaneous trip to Canmore and booked a stay at the MTN House Hotel & Spa by Basecamp Resorts.
Having never stayed at one of their properties before - and with Ellie, our dog, joining us for her first hotel stay - we didn’t have any particular expectations as to how the stay would go! What a pleasant surprise!
The rooms were really nicely decorated, the lobby and shared spaces were cozy and inviting, and the views of the surrounding mountains from our window were stunning.
Continue reading this blog post for our review of the MTN House Hotel & Spa, including our thoughts on the location in Canmore, the in-room amenities, hot tub, along with plenty of photos from our stay!
By the way.....
If you're considering other hotels in the region and want something on the higher end, we've stayed at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge several times and highly recommend it. The indoor water park and outdoor pool are always a hit with the kids, which makes it a favourite for our family. You can read more about our stay here.
Where in Canmore is the MTN House by Basecamp Hotel & Spa Located?
MTN House by Basecamp is in the Silvertip community on the northern side of the Trans-Canada Highway in Canmore. It's set at the base of the hill and just down the road from Silvertip Golf Course - one of the premier courses in the Canadian Rockies.
There is a walking path network across the road from the hotel’s parking area that leads either up toward the golf course or down toward Benchlands Trail, where you can cross under the highway into town.

Although the hotel sits on the opposite side of the highway from downtown Canmore, we found it to be very accessible - though the location might not suit everyone.
If you’re driving, it takes about five minutes to reach the town centre, but you’ll need to consider parking. Walking into downtown takes around 20 minutes via the Benchlands Trail overpass.
If I were planning to walk into town frequently, I’d probably choose a place on the other side of the highway, closer to town. But if you have a car or plan to use the hotel as a base for exploring the area, the location works well, as access from the highway is quick and easy.

While it’s close to the highway, we didn’t notice any traffic noise during our stay, and the mountain views from the property are exceptional. The hotel did mention some construction work happening during the week, but it didn’t impact our weekend stay.

Check in & Lobby Area
Check-in was easy and completely contactless, which made arrival quick and hassle-free - we didn't stop at the check in desk once. Three days before our stay, we received an email inviting us to check in online, which simply meant letting the hotel know our expected arrival time so they could have the room ready.
The day before check-in, another email arrived with our unique digital door code and Wi-Fi information. We had no issues using the code during our entire stay, and it was convenient not having to carry a room key around.

The lobby felt welcoming as soon as we walked in. There was a cozy fireplace surrounded by sofas, and there were even blankets available if you wanted to curl up and relax.
I can imagine this space being especially popular in the winter months! The lobby also had two cozy reading nooks and a shelf stocked with board games - perfect for families with kids.

Pet Friendly Double Queen Room
One of the main reasons we chose to stay here was the availability of pet-friendly rooms, as we wanted to introduce our dog to hotel stays.
The pet-friendly rooms were conveniently located on the ground floor, which meant it was easy to take our dog outside without needing to climb stairs or use an elevator. It all seemed well thought out.

I was genuinely impressed by the room - it had a much more 'up market' feel than I was expecting, especially for a pet friendly room. The decor was thoughtfully done and suited the mountain setting perfectly.

The room had all the usual amenities you’d expect - like a safe, minifridge, wine glasses, and an ice bucket. There was also a Nespresso machine, which in my opinion is about as good as it gets for in-room coffee.

The bathroom was clean and fairly spacious, and I really appreciated the addition of Rocky Mountain Soap Co. products - one of our local favourites. I also loved that they offer a plastic-free option, which aligns with how we try to travel.

Dining Options
MTN House by Basecamp is home to Rhythm & Howl, the hotel’s on-site restaurant and cocktail bar. While we didn’t eat there during our stay, the space looked stylish, with a modern design and the menu seemed to focus on seasonal, locally inspired dishes.
You can check out the menu here - it looks fantastic.
There’s also a small café open during the day that serves light snacks like muffins and Monogram coffee. It’s a convenient spot to grab something quick before heading out for the day.

Hotel Amenities
This is one area where I think the hotel could improve. I was surprised to find there’s no fitness centre or gym, which is something I’ve come to expect at most higher-end hotels these days. There is also no swimming pool.
That said, the hotel does have a small, but well-designed hot tub area with some lovely mountain views. There’s also a small changing area near the entrance with plenty of stalls.

Perhaps the reason for the relatively limited amenities is that the hotel is in the middle of building the Wildwood Nordic Spa.
It’s expected to offer a full Nordic spa experience, likely similar to the one at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. This is anticipated to open in November 2025, so we’ll be sure to return once it’s finished to give it a try.
Review of the MTN House Basecamp Canmore Summary
All in all, we had a great stay and would be happy to return in the future - especially once the Wildwood Nordic Spa is complete! It would make a perfect base to explore the Banff area as part of a epic road trip!
A reminder that if you plan on spending any time in Kananaskis, you will need to purchase the Kananaskis Conservation Pass, and if you plan to visit Banff National Park (or any National Park for that matter), you will need a National Park Pass before you go.
