Meeting the parents in Bangkok
Meeting up with Family in Bangkok!

Today we flew to Bangkok to meet my parents, and even though their first flight was delayed they still managed to make their connection with minutes to spare. In the end they actually met us at the airport because our bags took so long to come out.

We wanted to catch a six seater taxi but were told the large one could fit all of us. Technically they were right, although the girls ended up in the boot on a makeshift seat.

They thought it was the best thing ever, but I’m not entirely convinced about the safety side of things!

Terminal 21 Shopping Mall

We arrived at our hotel around lunchtime but couldn’t check into our room until 3pm, so we headed over to the Terminal 21 shopping mall to pass the time. Each level is themed around a different country which added a fun twist to the mall.

pad thai

We grabbed a few small snacks from the food court on the ground floor and ended up with the best pad Thai I’ve ever had. It was delicious and only cost about $2.50.

The Aloft Bangkok Hotel

We made it back to the hotel and my parents were able to get into their room straight away, but ours still wasn’t ready for a while.

a drink and shooting some pool

The hotel staff were very apologetic and offered me a free drink while I waited, so I passed the time playing a bit of pool. Not a bad deal!

our room in the aloft hotel

We were a little worried it might be noisy since the hotel is in a lively nightlife area, but the room was really nice. The view across the city is great, and the room is spacious with two comfy double beds.

Dinner in Sukhumvit 11, Bangkok

We went out for an early dinner since my parents wanted to catch up on sleep after their long flight. I was surprised by the food options in Bangkok's Sukhumvit 11 area - everything was either non-Thai or incredibly expensive.

Walking through the streets of Sukhumvit 11

Finally we found a small spot called Zong Peep, a bit of a hole-in-the-wall with just a few seats. The menu was limited, as it mainly sold just khao soi curry, but we’d been telling my parents how delicious northern Thai food is, so they were keen to try it.

They both loved the curry, and the spice level was just right for them, so it was a successful first evening!
